Frequently Asked Questions

Practical questions about the relay coordination platform and the engineering principles behind protection studies.

What is relay coordination?

Relay coordination is the selection and verification of protection settings so the device closest to a fault operates appropriately while upstream devices provide backup protection.

What is a time-current characteristic (TCC) curve?

A TCC curve plots the operating time of a protective device against current. Engineers compare curves over the expected fault-current range to assess selectivity and backup operation.

What is the difference between IDMT and definite-time protection?

IDMT protection has a time that changes with the current-to-pickup multiple. A definite-time element operates after a configured delay when its pickup condition is satisfied. Their combined behavior depends on the selected protection scheme and the software model.

How does this website treat composite IDMT and definite-time elements?

Within the relay coordination study tool, the IDMT section applies below the definite-time pickup, and the definite-time section governs after that pickup. Verify this against the displayed composite TCC curve and chosen settings.

Why is transformer earthing important for earth-fault coordination?

Zero-sequence earth-fault current paths depend on transformer winding connections and neutral earthing. Upstream earth-fault element visibility cannot be assumed across a delta or an unearthed winding.

How is the coordination margin checked?

At a common study current, compare the operating time of the upstream backup device against the downstream primary device, using the modeled composite characteristics, fault-current transformations and required design margin.

Should motor starting be considered?

Yes. Starting current and starting duration may require a motor-start curve or other load constraints on the TCC plot so acceptable starting conditions do not cause unwanted relay operation.

Can study results be applied directly to a live plant?

No. Validate settings with approved single-line diagrams, short-circuit results, CT/VT ratios, relay manuals, site design philosophy, operating scenarios and the relevant IEC/IEEE guidance before implementation.
